Personal Life

On March 15, 1996, a 21-year-old lady called the police and said two men had broken into her hotel room and forcefully raped her. The same evening, Greg Dietrich and Matt Patricia were charged, arrested, and released on bail.

Matt Patricia was charged by a grand jury in Texas with one count of aggravated sexual assault, a crime that carries a possible life sentence in prison.

Even though the trial had already begun in January 1997, the complainant’s request to dismiss the case was accepted when the victim admitted she was unable “to withstand the rigors and stress of a trial.”

In 2009, Matt Patricia reportedly married his longtime girlfriend, Raina Patricia. The couple had three children named Giamina Patricia, Dominic Patricia, and Dante Patricia.

In 1996, Matt Patricia started his coaching career as a graduate assistant while still a student at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI). He worked with Hoffman Air & Filtration Systems in East Syracuse, New York, as an application engineer for two years.

Matt Patricia had a job offer from the Westinghouse Electric Company after receiving his diploma, but he chose to return to football instead, coaching the defensive line for Amherst College from 1999 to 2000. He relocated to Syracuse University in 2001 and worked there for three seasons as the offensive graduate assistant for the squad.

In 2004, the year the Patriots won their third Super Bowl in Super Bowl XXXIX, Matt Patricia became a coaching assistant on the offensive staff under head coach Bill Belichick

Matt Patricia was reassigned as the Patriots’ assistant offensive line coach in 2005 following the resignation of Jeff Davidson, the assistant offensive line/tight ends coach.

The following season, Matt Patricia underwent another reassignment as the linebackers coach for the 2006 campaign.

Matt Patricia was hired as the Detroit Lions’ head coach on February 5, 2018. His status came under investigation in May 2018 after news outlets learned that he had been charged with sexual assault back in 1996.

Rod Wood, the team president of the Detroit Lions, initially responded by saying, “I have no knowledge of this, but a few hours later, he replied, “I feel extremely satisfied with Matt Patricia‘s interview and hiring process.

I can say with 100% assurance that all I’ve discovered about the man has only verified what I already knew about him and has in no way altered our choice to hire him as our head coach.”

Matt Patricia, alongside the general manager Bob Quinn, were both sacked by the Lions on November 28, 2020. This happened after his skills had received a lot of criticism.

The firing occurred after the 4-5 Lions dropped to 4-7 following back-to-back lopsided losses: a 20-0 loss to the Carolina Panthers on November 22 (the first time the Lions had been blanked since 2009) and a 41-25 loss to the Houston Texans on November 26 in the annual Thanksgiving Day game for the Lions.
