Jennifer Garner feels most beautiful in sweatpants without makeup
People Magazine is asking women what makes them feel most beautiful. Jennifer Garner’s answer is just what you’d expect from her – she feels the best when she’s chilling at home in comfortable clothes without makeup and with her glasses on. She did concede that it might not be the same as feeling beautiful, and she also included her kids in her answer. That might not be how she would typically answer that question – People’s Most Beautiful issue is heavily focused on motherhood and children. Here’s some of what she said:
To celebrate PEOPLE’s Beautiful Issue, we caught up with Garner to chat about what makes her feel most beautiful, and as it turned out, it’s when she’s not in any makeup at all.
“My kids are so relieved to see me take my makeup off and put glasses and sweatpants on,” she tells PEOPLE about what makes her feel her best. “I guess that doesn’t really count as feeling beautiful! It is more like feeling wanted and loved for being me, which is even better.”
Coincidentally, the first time she felt truly beautiful was when she got all dolled up for a school event, the sixth grade Santa Claus breakfast in elementary school. “I slept in pink sponge rollers the night before and wore some little elf costume my mom sewed for me,” she said. “I remember feeling cute and noticing that it was a new and different and nice way to feel.”
And despite having access to every top hair and makeup artist today, she’s most proud to have mastered the skill of “wearing just enough makeup to look better without anything extra,” she says.
But her most endearing answer was when she was asked what’s her favorite way to make the people she loves feel beautiful. “I love to take my mom and sisters shopping,” she says.
Of course she told a cute story about her childhood. I believe this about Garner, because we see her so often without makeup, sometimes with wet hair. She just wants to do her thing and not have to fuss over her styling. Kelly Clarkson said something similar in her People “Most Beautiful” interview, that she feels the best when she’s relaxed and without any makeup. She said “I just don’t really care.”
In my bathroom there’s a little retro sign with a cherubic looking 50s pinup that says “hair and makeup, we can fix it.” This is my philosophy about styling. If I am feeling like crap, like now on this new birth control, I just do my hair and makeup, get dressed up and I feel much better. It’s not my job to do that though. Actresses and women in the media who have to go through extensive beauty prep probably do feel better when they can take it off, put on sweatpants and just be themselves at home. A lot of women feel better that way regardless, just not me.
Garner has some more interviews as she made an appearance at CinemaCon in Las Vegas yesterday to promote her upcoming action film, Peppermint, which is out this September. She talked about the physical training she went through for the role and her character’s motivation, which is to avenge her family’s death. ET asked Garner on the red carpet how she’s doing so well on Instagram and she said her assistant does the editing. She said “I just say to my awesome buddy, partner-in-crime, assistant, social media guru, Mo, I just say, ‘You know what would be funny? I wanna do me cleaning out this bag,’ and she’ll be like, ‘Ah, ok.’ And then she does it.
“She’s so good at editing, I said, ‘How do you decide, when you’re editing, what to do?’ And she said, ‘I just make fun of you. Because we’re so close that I just pick out whatever is making fun of you.’ And then we put it up.”
That’s surprisingly honest and helps explain how her videos are so well edited. Here are some more photos from her appearance in Vegas yesterday.
