American actor, best remembered for roles in TV shows Gunsmoke, How the West Was Won and films such as Big Jim McLain, Island in the Sky, The Sea Chase, Hondo, Gun the Man Down, Horizons West, Carbine Williams, Hellgate and Her Twelve Men. In the 1970's he said "I'm 6-6 and weigh 225 pounds", although he also said in 2005 Tv.com, "I was 6 feet 7 when I started and I've shrunk up a little bit. I'm probably 6-5 or so now. But up here at 82 I feel pretty good"

Then there were times when they'd dig a trench for me to stand in so I wouldn't dwarf the rest of the cast. Once they even had two leading characters wearing foot-high lifts on their shoes. There are some disadvantages to being tall, but I wouldn't shave an inch off my height - not even for the movies.-- 1956 It wouldn't be bad if I played leads myself. Then it wouldn't matter how tall I was. But a lot of leading men don't like to have actors taller than they appear in their pictures. I don't blame them. If I were a star, I'd probably object to having someone seven feet tall in one of my pictures.
-- 1952 I was supposed to be a gunman who challenged Marshall Dillon [Arness]. I suggested to the director that perhaps I might be more of a threat if I wore lifts in my shoes to make me taller. So the wardrobe people gave me high heels to make me about 6 feet. When I walked on the set and the showdown came, I looked over at Arness, and he was suddenly 7 feet tall. He had heard I was getting shoes to make myself taller, so he got a pair too and was still a foot taller than me!
