"Nutrition can be intimidating, but it doesn't have to be," Eva Marie told GQ. "There are certain foods I can eat, and certain amounts of them I can eat. It's like balancing a checkbook. You budget so you can splurge on something you really want."
Due to late nights and being on the road, Eva Marie has to plan ahead. "When you're tired and hungry, it's hard to make smart choices," she told GQ. This is why she worked with a meal prep company, "which meant I didn't have to think too much about where I would go, or which grocery store had rotisserie chicken, or what restaurant could make me a salad," she explained. "I was just able to bring food that was already packaged for me. Waiting too long to eat can be a trap, especially after an event. I would eat my pre-planned meals every three hours while traveling just so I wouldn't hit that 'I'm starving' point by the time we arrived at the hotel."
While in the WWE, Eva Marie focused more on Olympic lifting. "I had to make sure that I was physically able to lift another human being at all times," she explained to GQ. "Now, I'm going for a different, leaner look. High-intensity interval training and Tabata workouts are really good for me, because they prevent me from getting bored, and don't require me to be in the gym for two hours. I can get in, do what I need to do, and get out."
"I kind of go by an 80/20 rule. 80 percent of the time, I'm pretty good," she told GQ about her diet. "Otherwise, I allow myself—especially during the holiday season—to live a little! It's not going to hurt."
Eva Marie practices intermittent fasting "about two to three times a week" waiting until two in the afternoon to eat her first meal. "I have a lot of stomach issues, just from when I was a little kid, and fasting helps with my digestive system. I really enjoy it, but first, see if your body can handle it. A lot of people have trouble because they're so focused on the idea of 'I can't eat for this certain amount of time,' and then they can't function," she continued. "The key for me is making sure I'm taking a branched-chain amino acids supplement. When I'm fasting, I'll take BCAAs in the morning before my workout, and again afterwards. Doing that helps me avoid feeling tired or lethargic."
When she isn't fasting, she starts her day off with liquids. "I'll wake up and have a protein shake or a veggie egg white omelet. The rest of the day is pretty much salad and grilled chicken. I really love fruit, too, because I have a sweet tooth. I wish that I didn't, but fruit helps me deal with it," she told GQ. She also revealed to E! News that she eats cave girl style a lot of the time. "So I try to follow the Paleo diet, no processed foods a lot of lean meats, veggies and fruits," she explained. "And then you know I'll definitely get a cheat in there because I'm human. But I found that if I keep it like that, where I don't really restrict myself anymore because that's when I feel like I want to cheat, if I'm only eating a certain amount of this and a certain amount of that, I'll just go crazy. So I just try to eat non-processed food."
What are her go-to cheat meals? "Oh my God, there are so many! I'm Mexican and Italian, so my mom is a fantastic cook. I shit you not, every time I go back home, I gain, like, 10 pounds, just because her food is so hard for me to turn down. Plus, I'm not there all the time, so I give myself a little allowance to enjoy it more," she told GQ. "I'm a sucker for bacon waffles—they're to die for. And I love banana pancakes. I should just honestly film my cheat day because people would be impressed by how much food I can put down."
If you want a body like Eva's, aim for daily sweat sessions. "I try to break a sweat every single day," she told E! News. "Whatever that may be, if it's even just going for a walk or a run. Sometimes I won't lift all the time but my biggest thing is to break a sweat."
