In an interview with Esquire, Emily revealed that she struggles to feel connected to her body. "I've lived a life of dissociating, and of having a hard time feeling like I'm inside of my body. I find joy in walking around New York City. I find joy in eating. Certainly, pregnancy and giving birth to my son has given me a new respect for my body. That helped me let go of the need to control my body and feel like I'm in charge of it. But I think it's still a work in progress for me, and I don't know that it ever won't be," she said.
One way Emily maintains her mental health is by reminding herself that it's okay to feel emotions. "I didn't realize that I cry when I get angry until I thought about it as I wrote. I think it's a way of softening ourselves. We make ourselves feel like should be tended to rather than be something scary. Sometimes it's okay to be angry. There are reasons to be angry," she told Esquire.
Emily described herself as "a carnivore," to Elle UK. "I really like to eat meat. I crave iron so I am definitely not the kind of person who you will find eating a salad. I like to keep it really balanced to give my body energy and also be healthy." She added to the New York Times: "For me, it's about feeling good about what you eat. I do love turmeric and beet juices. It's so L.A., you can't avoid it."
Preparing her own meals help Emily keep track of what she is putting in her body. "I cook a lot, so that really helps: You know how much salt and sugar and all of that kind of stuff you are putting in your body," she added to Elle.
"I think its good to indulge occasionally," Emily told the New York Times. "I wouldn't say I am the type of girl who craves Doritos but I definitely love a good cupcake sometimes. You know what I mean? Or a croissant in the morning. I think it is like really important to give yourself a break. And also just really think about where things are coming from what kind of ingredients are going into your body."
Emily has a relaxed approach to fitness. "I don't have a trainer, and I don't really go to the gym. I go on long walks and hikes with my girlfriends. That's about it. I'm just not a crazy fitness person. I'm definitely an outlier in the industry," she told the New York Times. She added to Elle that "doing yoga a couple of times a week" is a "really big part" of her regimen.
