Alfred Hitchcock was a British film director and producer. A legendary director of thrillers, beginning his career in his early 20s, his feature films are Number 13, The Pleasure Garden, The Mountain Eagle, The Lodger: A Story of the London Fog, The Ring, which he wrote; Downhill (1927), The Farmer’s Wife, Easy Virtue, Champagne, which he also co-wrote; The Manxman, Blackmail (1929), Juno and the Paycock, Murder!, The Skin Game, all three of which he co-wrote; Mary (1931), Rich and Strange, Number Seventeen, both of which he also co-wrote; Waltzes from Vienna, The Man Who Knew Too Much (1934), The 39 Steps (1935), Secret Agent, Sabotage, Young and Innocent, The Lady Vanishes (1938), Jamaica Inn, Rebecca (1940), Foreign Correspondent, Mr. & Mrs. Smith, Suspicion (1941), Saboteur, Shadow of a Doubt, Lifeboat (1944), Spellbound (1945), Notorious (1946), The Paradine Case, Rope, Under Capricorn, Stage Fright (1950), Strangers on a Train (1951), I Confess, Dial M for Murder, Rear Window (1954), To Catch a Thief, The Trouble with Harry, The Man Who Knew Too Much, The Wrong Man (1956), Vertigo, North by Northwest, Psycho (1960), The Birds, Marnie, Torn Curtain, Topaz, Frenzy, and Family Plot. He also co-wrote and was assistant director on several other films early in his career, and created, hosted, and directed episodes of, the show Alfred Hitchcock Presents.
Alfred was the son of Emma Jane (Whelan/Wheland) and William J. Hitchcock, a greengrocer. His parents were both of mixed English and Irish ancestry. He was raised Catholic. He moved to Hollywood in 1939. Alfred became a U.S. citizen in 1955.
Alfred was married to screenwriter and editor Alma Reville, until his death, with whom he had a daughter, actress and producer Pat Hitchcock. Alfred and Alma co-wrote several of his early films.
Alfred’s paternal grandfather was Joseph H. Hitchcock (the son of Charles Hitchcock and Jemima Spooner). Joseph was English, and was born in Stratford, Greater London. Charles was the son of William Hitchcock and Sarah Martin. Jemima was the daughter of Robert Spooner and Susanna.
Alfred’s paternal grandmother was named Ann Mahoney (the daughter of Sylvester/Silvester Mahoney and Eleanor/Ellen). Ann was born in Stratford, Greater London, and had Irish ancestry.
Alfred’s maternal grandfather was named John Whelan. John was born in Ballinamore, Leitrim, Ireland.
